In this article I will give you some information about what it is like to do a board year at Asset | SBIT. My name is Koen Verhagen and at the moment I am the treasurer of SBIT. Being a member of an Asset board is a fulltime job so there is a lot to tell about.
Before I tell about my board year I will give you some Information about myself. I am 23 years old and last year I finished my bachelor Business Economics. In September I will start the master finance at Tilburg University. Currently I’m living in Tilburg but I grew up in a small town called “Mariaheide”. For most people it is unknown so I prefer to call it somewhere between Eindhoven and Den Bosch. As you can expect from someone from a small town I like to play soccer, other sports and drink a beer with friends. This is something I kept doing while studying in Tilburg. When I was living in Tilburg for a while I wanted to do some more besides my study so I started to do some committees at Asset | SBIT.
When in noticed what it is like to be part of a student association I decided to bring it to another level and do a board year. This was a decision I never regretted. My function description in the board is treasurer. The main tasks of a treasurer is making and monitoring the budget, bookkeeping, keeping up with the cash flow and making contracts for agreements partners. In other words, as a treasurer you get a practical insight on how to make budgets, how to do the accounting of an association, how to keep insight in the cash flows and how to make contracts. I always enjoyed doing this while learning how to do it. It is important to do keep up with you tasks so you can make the right financials decisions when needed to. When I had questions or could not figure out what to do there was always a group of old treasurers and students who loved to give me advise. Each quarter they help you to check if all financials are right so you are not alone. All these treasurer tasks may sound like a lot of work but in reality it is just a small part of your week tasks. As a board member you do way more than just your own function.
At the start of your board year you create your own portfolio. Together with your fellow board members you divide all tasks and responsibilities within the association. As a board you are responsible for all committees but each committee has a board member which coordinates the committee and communicates with the other board members. For my portfolio I became partly responsible for the SBIT-application and I chose the following committees, Entrepreneurship Event, Intercontinental Study Trip (IST), design and innovation. You are free to choose between all committees there is no mandatory committee to take. Nice thing about being a treasurer is that you are involved with every committee since every committee has a budget and financial decisions to make. This was something I really enjoyed during the year.
Being a board member gives you great opportunities to explore the labor market and get to know knew people. During last year I visited many interesting companies and learned a lot about the differences between these companies. You not only take part as participant of events organized by SBIT or Asset events but you also work together with the companies to facilitate and organize these events. You notice the different cultures and communications within a company. This experience gave me a better idea about where I would like to apply for a job in the future. Getting to know different companies is a nice thing but the best part of a board year for me is the people you get to know during the year. You meet lots of fellow students and alumni who have the same interests. These are not only formal relations but also friendships.
Altogether this board year so far provided great experiences and yet there are still some nice things to come. One of them is our study trip to Panama, we will leave next week. After Panama our board year is coming to his end. In the last weeks we have some more formal and informal events but in June we will introduce our successors. I am looking forward to handover our task but will have a mixed feeling about the year coming to its end.
